…Inaugurates Health and Safety Club
A Lagos based Safety firm, Occupational Health and Safety Managers, (O.H.S.M.) has trained over 900 students on how to respond to emergency situations.
This training is part of the firm’s activities to mark this year’s Global Community Service Day which held recently at Carley College, Agidingbi, Lagos.
The safety company also ina
ugurated a health and safety club in the school comprising of both students and teachers.
The Keynote Speaker and Managing Director Bayer Middle Africa Ltd., Mr. Sefihait Kone, said, that the yearly event is aimed at giving back to the society.
“This is a global initiative and what we are here for is to give back to the community. We decided to bring knowledge to the community.” He said.
Also speaking, the Administrator of Carley College, Solomon Asheru, who hails from Imo State, said that there was need to start imparting students with the knowledge of safety early as this will improve the lives of the entire citizens.
He said, “This is where we have a lot of insecurity and emergency situations can occur at any time. Basically, children should know how to respond to emergency situations at any time and this go a long way to save lives and properties.
“We have always been conscious of emergency situations. We have securities come from Alausa to inspect the school. There is no end to training in emergency situations and response. It is a step in the right direction to increasing the knowledge of the children,” he said.
Speaking with participants, the head boy of the school, Olugbenga Topmost, noted that the programme taught the students how to be safe in any situation they find themselves.
“There was a fire outbreak one time in a compound close to our school and we had the fear that it was going to get to us. It was caused by a spark from PHCN. We learnt how to be safe in any situation we find themselves. We also learn about good hygiene.”
The Head girl, Kesayo Agago, 15, said the programme exposed her to what safety is all about.
“I learnt about hygiene including seven steps to washing hands. We should call the attention of someone that can help us during a danger situation. Imbibe methods of safety. Ways of using the toilet to stop us from getting germs,” she said.
The Health Prefect, Shekina Aigbavboa, who was one of those honoured as a Health Ambassador said that she would make every effort to ensure that safety is upheld.
“I will make sure that after break, they pick up dirts to make the school, classes and environment neat. The school is a big school and when parents come, we want them to meet a neat environment.
“I will make sure pupils have the correct hairstyle and they are wearing the correct shoes and socks.
The social studies teacher, Mrs. Oluwayemisoke Agi, said, “We have really benefitted from the programme and we’ll maintain the information we learnt.”
