In line with its social responsibility policy and to join force with the government to further stop the spread of COVID-19 pandemic, the Nigerian Institution of Safety Engineers, Akwa Ibom State Chapter (NISafety – A division of the Nigerian Society of Engineers) has produced and distributed free hand sanitizers and disinfectants to several public offices in the state.

HSENations learnt that the NISafetyE team led by her Deputy National Chairman, Engr. Akaninyene Ekong and State Vice Chairman, Engr. Owoedimo Enang accompanied by Engr.Jude Inyang, Emmanuel Unanawo and Ubong Sunday visited several public service offices in Eket LGA including Federal Road Safety Corps division, National Drugs Enforcement Agency Command, Police Division, and the Nigerian Prison Service, to distribute the hand sanitizers, disinfectants, PPE (Hand gloves, Nose Mask).

Speaking with HSENations, the Deputy National Chairman, Engr. Akaninyene Ekong explained that the distribution of the materials is an emergency response initiative having discovered that there is a lacuna in the availability of protective equipments needed to curb the spread of the virus in the state.

“We have been sensitizing the people on the need for social distancing, personal respiratory hygiene, hand washing and the stay at home guidelines.

“But We can not depend on the government alone to do everything. So, as a responsive professional body, with a core interest in Public Safety, we had to step in and support in our little way with the limited resources we could come up with.

“For instance hand sanitizer are scarce in the market in Akwa Ibom. We in NISafetyE then decided to produce it ourselves in line with WHO standard and distribute it free of charge to selected locations.” Ekong said.

He further added that the association will further go on air via various radio stations to intensify her sensitization efforts.
