3 casualties, 11 hospitalisations recorded in Delta building collapse

The Delta State Police Command has confirmed three casualties and 11 hospitalisations in the Salvation Ministry Church building collapse at Okpanam, Oshimili North Local Government Area of the state.

The police spokesman in the state, DSP Bright Edafe confirmed this in a Wednesday statement.

He added that rescue operations at the sight have been concluded.

HSENations reports that the building collapsed around 5:55 pm on Tuesday.

“Rescue Operation is over, 18 person rescued initially, four person’s discharged, 11 person’s still receiving treatment, three deaths recorded which includes two female children and one woman, their names unknown for now, kindly debunk the rumours making rounds that ten people died, that’s not correct,” the Police Public Relations Officer said.

In a 2021 paper titled, ‘Building Collapse in Nigeria during recent years – Causes, effects and way forward’, P O Awoyera et al identified the major causes of building collapse in Nigeria as “use of defective or substandard building materials, no requisite technical knowledge, nonadherence to building codes and standards, the use of non-professionals and the high level of corruption.”
