Lagos State Government Takes Proactive Measures to Enhance Environmental Safety by Demolishing Flood-Prone Structures

In a significant move to improve environmental safety and mitigate the impact of flooding, the Lagos State Government has commenced the demolition of unauthorized structures obstructing drainage channels. This initiative aims to prevent future flooding incidents and ensure a safer environment for residents.

On Monday, enforcement officials from the Lagos Ministry of Environment and Water Resources (MOE&WR) carried out demolition exercises in two key locations: Owode-Agiliti Drainage Channel in Kosofe and Ajiran-Regional Road Collector drain in Eti-Osa Local Government Area. These operations targeted structures that violated environmental laws by obstructing crucial drainage channels.

The removal of these structures is part of a comprehensive strategy to deflood the affected areas and restore the functionality of the drainage systems. By eliminating these obstructions, the government aims to enhance water flow and reduce the risk of flooding, which has previously caused significant damage and posed safety hazards to residents.

According to the Ministry of Environment and Water Resources, the operations were conducted by the Drainage Enforcement Department. “Operatives from the Drainage Enforcement department of MOE&WR were at work on Monday removing contraventions along Owode-Agiliti Drainage Channel, Kosofe, as part of deflooding measures,” stated the ministry. Similar efforts were carried out in the Eti-Osa Local Government Area to ensure the safety and well-being of the community.
