A three-story building located at 95 Cemetry Street, directly opposite Ebute Metta Comprehensive Health Centre, Lagos, collapsed last week with two people trapped.

Officials of the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA), who quickly responded to distress calls from residents, were able to rescue the victims, comprising a female senior citizen and a girl.
The emergency responders in the Lagos State Ambulance Service (LASAMBUS) attended to the victims before they were released to their families.
According to some residents, the structure made up of six units of a bedroom and parlour mini flats, had been showing signs of distress for a while.
Following the collapse of the building, the Nigerian Institute of Building (NIOB) and Lagos State chapter chairman of the Building Collapse Prevention Guild (BCPG) have again decried the incessant collapse of existing structures in the state in recent times.
NIOB President, Kunle Awobodu, said the collapsed building constructed by a developer in late 90s fell into the category of shoddy building constructions.

Awobodu said the collapse calls for the immediate demolition of buildings that were constructed below standards.
Also, the chairman, Lagos State chapter of the BCPG, Adeyinka Ogunseye, regretted that buildings have continued to collapse in the state despite the advocacy made against it by other professional bodies and the guild.
He called on the State Ministry of Physical Planning and Urban Development and the Lagos State Building Control Agency (LASBCA) to rise up to the occasion by demolishing all distressed existing buildings in the metropolis.
Ogunseye, who extolled the ministry for publishing the list of some old and distressed structures marked for demolition, said the authority should go-ahead to seek approval for their removal.
