Lagos Ferry Services Breaks Silence After Boat Fire, Unveils Bold New Safety Measures

The Lagos Ferry Services (LAGFERRY) has reiterated its firm commitment to passenger safety, improved connectivity, fleet modernization, and infrastructure growth, solidifying its position as a key provider of water transport in Lagos State.

Managing Director of LAGFERRY, Hon. Abdoulbaq Ladi Balogun, disclosed this during a media briefing following a recent boat fire incident.

“In the aftermath of the incident, our immediate priority was ensuring the safety and well-being of all affected passengers and crew. We provided prompt medical attention and covered all expenses through our public transportation insurance policy. This swift action reflects our dedication to passenger safety and welfare,” Balogun stated.

He explained that the agency had intensified safety checks across all vessels and terminals to reinforce secure and reliable water transportation. He also credited the agency’s strict adherence to Environmental, Health, Safety, and Quality (EHSQ) protocols for averting what could have been a major disaster at the Ipakodo Terminal.

“Thanks to our safety procedures and rapid inter-agency collaboration, we successfully contained the situation, protecting both lives and infrastructure,” he said.

Highlighting efforts towards continuous improvement, Balogun revealed that LAGFERRY had retrofitted its entire fleet to meet modern safety and performance standards. He also announced the commencement of a state-of-the-art drydock facility that will serve as a dedicated maintenance hub for the agency.

“Retrofitting our boats will boost fleet durability, ensuring smoother, safer, and more efficient rides across Lagos waterways. The drydock will keep our vessels in optimal condition, reduce downtime, and lower operational costs,” he noted. “It will also strengthen our self-reliance and ensure long-term sustainability in water transportation.”

Balogun reaffirmed LAGFERRY’s mission to deliver safe, innovative, and passenger-centered services.

“We remain fully committed to providing safe, efficient, and innovative transportation solutions. Our continuous initiatives in fleet retrofitting, human capital development, and infrastructure expansion highlight our mission to enhance connectivity, boost water transport adoption, and make it safer and more convenient for all,” he concluded.
