Mpox Outbreak: Africa CDC Issues Continental Health Emergency

The Africa Centre for Disease Control (CDC) has officially declared mpox a “public health emergency of continental security.”

This announcement comes amid rising concerns over the spread of a new variant, Clade Ib, which has resulted in over 13,700 cases and 450 deaths in the Democratic Republic of Congo since the beginning of the year.

Mpox, a viral disease transmitted through close contact, typically causes flu-like symptoms and pus-filled lesions. While most cases are mild, the virus can be fatal, particularly with the more easily transmissible Clade Ib variant.

The virus has also spread to other African countries, including Burundi, Kenya, and Rwanda, heightening the urgency of the situation.

During an online briefing on Tuesday, Jean Kaseya, the director-general of the Africa CDC, expressed deep concern over the virus’s impact on the continent.

“With a heavy heart but with an unyielding commitment to our people, to our African citizens, we declare mpox as a public health emergency of continental security,” Kaseya stated.

He highlighted the far-reaching effects of the outbreak, noting that “Mpox has now crossed borders, affecting thousands across our continent. Families have been torn apart, and the pain and suffering have touched every corner of our continent.”

The declaration of a public health emergency is expected to strengthen cross-border response efforts, compelling member countries to report new cases to the Africa CDC.

It will also facilitate the mobilization of both domestic and international resources, as well as accelerate vaccine research and development.

Last week, the Africa CDC indicated that such a declaration was imminent, emphasizing that it would enable a more coordinated and effective response to the outbreak across the continent.
