The Nigerian federal government has introduced a National Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) Strategic Plan to enhance worker health across all industries and boost productivity.
Unveiled in Abuja by Coordinating Minister of Health and Social Welfare, Prof. Muhammad Pate, represented by Permanent Secretary Daju Kachollom, the five-year initiative (2024–2028) aims to create a safer working environment aligned with global standards.
Prof. Pate highlighted Nigeria’s commitment to OHS through international conventions, including Convention No. 187, which promotes safe workspaces, and Convention No. 190, addressing workplace violence and harassment. “As a member of the International Labour Organization (ILO), Nigeria is committed to ratifying conventions, treaties, and policies related to Occupational Health and Safety,” Pate stated.
The minister underscored that the strategy is designed to guide the Ministry of Health and other stakeholders in fostering safer and healthier workplaces to support sustainable development. “This plan is aimed at improving national productivity by ensuring a consistently high level of health among all workers,” he said, emphasizing that the strategy provides access to OHS services for all Nigerian workers.
The OHS plan will include guidance on managing work-related diseases, injuries, and accidents, creating a collaborative framework between the health sector and industry partners. “It will enhance workforce health by ensuring a safe and conducive working environment across Nigeria,” Pate added.
Additionally, Ms. Oluyinka Olayemi, National Coordinator of the Africa Center for Disease Control in Nigeria, highlighted the broader role of OHS within the nation’s health system, addressing non-communicable diseases and mental health. She expressed confidence that the plan would reinforce OHS foundations and improve occupational health responses nationwide.
“Through robust systems and tools, Nigeria can better prevent, protect, and respond to occupational health issues, contributing to healthier lives and comprehensive health coverage for all,” Olayemi concluded.
