Petroleum training institute commissions fire academy

The  Petroleum Training Institute recently launched the Fire Academy as part of its drive to diversify and cater to the voracious need for trained, professionals in fire fighting, prevention and other fire-related issues that might arise in both industrial and domestic environments. Mrs Mercy Irefo is a senior staff of the Petroleum Training Institute and co-ordinator, of the Fire Academy under the skill and development Academy, PTI.

In this interview with Ajuluchukwu Brown, she links the incessant fire outbreak across the country to a lack of awareness and ignorance on the part of the people.

 

What is the Fire Academy all about?

The Fire Academy is our pride at the moment. 13 years ago the Petroleum Training Institute PTI, had the vision of starting this Academy due to the rising cases of fire incidents in oil and gas Industries mostly on platforms and houseboats in the country. In celebrating its 50th anniversary, the Petroleum Training Institute plans to gift the country this Academy. The Fire Academy Officially opens for Training this October, 24th 2022. The Fire Academy is a one-stop centre for your desired training.

The school is specialise in hydrocarbon and domestic fire fighting. We intend to provide a hands-on learning experience structured to provide entrants to trainees with a stable career path in fire fighting, adequately equipped to take up duties at any given time and place irrespective of the type of fire and location therein.

Firefighting is not only for professionals but for us all. A lot of fire outbreak happens due to a lack of awareness, ignorance and the inability of people to be able to combat the incipient fire.

It will interest you to know that many people have fire extinguishers yet they are unable to operate them. There is a whole lot we are bringing to the industries in skill building and educating individuals to increase manpower in this aspect and reduce the risk of fire outbreaks in our society.

With the academy in place, what does the institute tend to achieve?

Our main objective is to impart knowledge through the training of competent personnel across various industries who will be well equipped with the proficiency of extinguishing fire and rescue service in order to protect lives and properties in the event of any fire outbreak. Our desire is to focus on building a structured academy that looks into all aspects of fire prevention and control, fire fighting and the business aspect of fire fighting and management. We are currently in the process of partnership with other stakeholders in fire fighting like the Federal Fire Service, Federal Airport Authority of Nigeria, the Nigerian Navy, Air Force and other sister bodies.

Who are your target applicants?

It is opened to any undergraduate who wants to acquire firefighting skills. Professional across diverse industries. Heads of Units / Departments. Supervisors, and managers. Firemen already practising but need to be trained in other areas of firefighting to upgrade their skills and competence needed to practice and be the best in firefighting. Businessmen or women who want to train to acquire knowledge in the business aspect of fire management.

What are the courses or aspects of training The school intends to cover?

There have a variety of courses we handle to prepare great men and women who are willing to take up the responsibility to extinguish any fire when required.

 

We have a variety of Courses ranging from: Awareness Courses, Fire Management Courses, Fire Engineering Courses, Administrative Courses, Specialised Courses, and Professional Courses for Fire Fighters and all who want to build a career in Fire Fighting, prevention and control. The Programmes and Duration are as follows: Awareness programmes 1-2weeks, Certificate programmes 1-6weeks, Specialised programmes 4-16weeks, and Professional Diploma Programmes, 3-9months.

 

The Training Days and lecture times are from Monday to Friday(full time) 8am -4pm(Class and Drill). For the sake of flexibility, Weekend Classes(part time) starts from 9am to 5 pm. We are calling for sponsors. Firefighting is an untapped and under-explored industry that needs the right investment, giving to it’s societal relevance. Come along!
