Recent flooding in Obiakpu community of Ohaji/Egbema Local Government Area in Imo State has resulted in significant devastation, reportedly triggered by the laying of pipelines by oil companies. The flooding has caused immense damage to both agricultural lands and aquatic life, amounting to an estimated loss of around N3 billion.
According to reports from reliable sources, the ongoing pipeline laying activities by Sterling Global Oil Company have led to the breach of a river bank in neighboring Egbema, causing the river to overflow its banks and inundate farmlands in the area.
One affected farmer, Mrs. Agnes Ikwuegbu, described the flooding as unprecedented, highlighting the shock and dismay it has caused among the local community. She attributed the flooding to the pipeline laying activities of the oil company, which she claimed had disrupted natural water channels.
The consequences of the flooding are dire for local farmers like Mrs. Ikwuegbu, who have lost their means of livelihood and income. Many, like her, had invested heavily in their farmlands, relying on the expected returns to sustain their families and repay loans. With their crops destroyed, they now face financial uncertainty and an inability to meet their basic needs.
Moreover, individuals like Mr. Ikechukwu Osuji, who rely on annual income from agricultural activities, face substantial financial losses. The destruction of his cucumber farm, which typically yields significant returns, has left him grappling with the prospect of financial ruin.
Additionally, the flooding has impacted other aspects of life in the community, such as the displacement of fishponds belonging to families like that of Jude Isikogu. The disruption caused by the flood has not only destroyed existing fish stocks but also dashed hopes of future harvests, exacerbating the economic strain on affected households.
