In a historic development for Africa’s safety community, Oswald Magwenzi, CEO of Zambia Sugar Plc, introduced the “Livingstone Safety Declaration” during the HSENations AfriSafe 2024 Awards Ceremony and Gala Dinner on November 8, 2024. This landmark proposal aims to promote a shared vision of safety across every facet of life on the African continent.
Magwenzi’s announcement, made in the presence of the Minister of Labour, Honourable Brenda M Tambatamba, members of the AfriSafe board, and delegates from the Safety Congress, sets forth an inspiring vision for safety across all dimensions of African life: “A safe continent, safe countries, safe communities, safe food, safe water, safe cities, safe tourist activities, safe homes, safe schools, safe colleges and universities, safe transport and travel, safe workplaces, everything safe.”
As the CEO of the event’s headline sponsor, Magwenzi emphasized that the declaration symbolizes a renewed commitment to protecting lives and advancing safety standards across Africa. “Following the successful hosting of AfriSafe 2024, we believe this declaration can serve as a rallying point for the entire safety community,” he stated, underscoring the declaration’s potential to unite safety advocates, organizations, and policymakers in a collaborative pursuit of excellence in safety.
Magwenzi envisions the Livingstone Declaration as more than just an aspirational statement; he hopes it will become a foundational document that inspires practical action and regional collaboration. Through this declaration, he urged stakeholders across the continent to commit to initiatives that address safety in homes, workplaces, cities, and more.
The CEO also acknowledged other Zambian companies that supported the AfriSafe 2024 Awards, highlighting corporate Zambia’s role in championing safety standards. Their sponsorship, he noted, reflects a growing commitment to raising safety benchmarks across Africa.
Named after the host city of AfriSafe 2024, the Livingstone Safety Declaration signifies a new era of safety collaboration in Africa. This declaration not only celebrates the strides already made in safety but also sets a higher standard for future initiatives aimed at ensuring safety for all.
