Challenging the Status Quo: Addressing Safety Research Challenges in Nigeria

The International Research Conference on Occupational Safety and Health (IRCOSH) 2025 has been scheduled to hold on March 27, 2025, at the Faculty of Education Hall, University of Lagos, Akoka, Yaba, Lagos.

The conference theme, “Building a Safer Future for All: Importance of Localised QHSE Research to the Development of Sustainable Workplace Safety Culture in Africa,” is particularly relevant in Nigeria, where safety research challenges have hindered the development of a robust safety culture.

A persistent challenge facing safety research in Nigeria is the prevalence of researchers who collect funds from foreign organizations without delivering on their research promises. This unethical practice not only undermines the integrity of the research community but also deprives Nigeria of critical knowledge and insights that could inform safety policies and practices.

According to a recent survey, 75% of research funds allocated to African countries are not utilized effectively, resulting in a significant waste of resources (Source: African Academy of Sciences). Furthermore, a staggering 90% of research conducted in Africa is funded by external sources, highlighting the lack of investment in local research capacity (Source: UNESCO Institute for Statistics).

The IRCOSH 2025 conference aims to address these challenges by promoting localized research that prioritizes the unique needs and contexts of African workplaces. The conference will bring together researchers, policymakers, and industry stakeholders to share knowledge, expertise, and best practices in occupational safety and health.

“We are excited to host IRCOSH 2025 in Lagos, Nigeria,” said Oluyemi Awolokun, Head, Digital Transformation and Communications, Occupational Safety and Health Research Institute, United Kingdom. “This conference presents a unique opportunity for us to tackle the challenges facing safety research in Nigeria and to promote a culture of safety excellence in African workplaces.”
