The Presidential Candidate of the Accord Party in the 2023 election, Prof. Christopher Imumolen, has called on President Bola Tinubu’s administration to instill hope among Nigerians amid the nation’s challenges. This appeal comes as social media groups mobilize support to highlight escalating hardships, increasing living costs, reduced living standards, and insecurity.
In response, the federal government has urged protest organizers to reconsider their plans, emphasizing efforts to address their concerns. Notable measures include the release of 20 trucks of rice to each state for needy citizens and the approval of a N70,000 minimum wage bill to enhance workers’ take-home pay. Additionally, the government has established centers where citizens can purchase 50kg of rice at a 50% discount.
Prof. Imumolen believes that beyond these measures, the President should engage in robust communication with citizens to provide hope. In a video release, he emphasized the importance of continuous dialogue, assuring Nigerian youths that despite current difficulties, efforts are being made to improve the situation. He advised using social media, the same tool spreading protests, to counter negativity with messages of hope.
Imumolen also urged President Tinubu to consider an inclusive government, incorporating individuals with the capacity and intellect to contribute meaningfully to various sectors of the economy, emphasizing that political appointments should prioritize merit over rewards.
Hope is that thing you look up to, even when you are faced with critical times, you’ll have that hope that very soon, we will be out of this.
“The only way that hope will come is for the President to begin to engage and continously assure Nigerian youths that, look, we understand what you’re going through, we know that things have not been going right, but there is hope.
“These are the things we are doing to put things right, just bear with us. That communication cannot be overemphasized, it must be on continous basis, Mr. President must use this time to talk to Nigerian youths, and begin to engage through the media”, he stated.
