Lagos State Leads The Way In Safety Standards: Massive Demolition Exercise Targets Illegal And Non-conforming Buildings

The issue of building collapse in Lagos State is one that has caused great concern and prompted action from the state government. In a bid to tackle this problem, officials from various agencies were deployed to identify and remove or demolish illegal, non-conforming, and distressed structures in the state.

Led by the General Manager of LASBCA, Gbolahan Oki, and the Task Force Chairman, CSP Shola Jejeloye, the team carried out the exercise in compliance with Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s directive after the recent collapse of a seven-story building on Banana Island.

During this incident, several construction workers were rescued, while others lost their lives or sustained varying degrees of injury. Investigations revealed that no approval was given for the construction of the collapsed structure, emphasizing the need for strict adherence to building regulations.

In response, Governor Sanwo-Olu ordered the demolition of over 20 buildings without valid approvals, including those seen to have violated building regulations and plans of the state. The governor expressed displeasure at the issuance of permits to sand fill the Lagos Lagoon without regard to the topography of the area, as well as the approvals given to developers by the federal government in connivance with some corrupt officials of the Lagos State government.

It is crucial to note that building collapses not only pose a threat to human lives but also have economic implications. They can lead to business disruption, loss of property, and other negative effects on the affected community. Therefore, it is imperative to ensure that all buildings in the state are constructed in compliance with building regulations and standards to avoid such occurrences.

To this end, the Lagos State government has been implementing measures to improve safety standards and reduce the incidence of building collapse. These measures include increased enforcement of building codes, improved monitoring of construction sites, and the use of technology to detect potential hazards.

In conclusion, the issue of building collapse is a serious one that requires urgent attention. It is commendable that the Lagos State government is taking proactive steps to address this problem, and it is hoped that these efforts will result in a significant reduction in building collapse incidents in the state. The safety of all residents and visitors to Lagos State should be a top priority, and everyone has a role to play in ensuring compliance with building regulations and standards.
