LASUTH Management Addresses Allegations of Patient’s Missing Intestines

The management of the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital (LASUTH), Ikeja, has responded to allegations surrounding a case involving a 12-year-old boy’s missing intestines following corrective surgery. From a hospital management safety perspective, LASUTH has taken steps to clarify their stance on the matter and ensure transparency in their actions.

Deborah Abiodun, the mother of the boy, raised concerns when LASUTH surgeons informed her that her son’s small intestines were missing after surgery on July 14, 2023. The child had been referred to LASUTH from a private hospital due to complications from a previous surgery to correct intestinal obstruction.

In a statement released via Twitter on Saturday, September 2, LASUTH’s management vehemently denied any intentional wrongdoing. They emphasized their commitment to maintaining high standards of safety and care within their institution.

LASUTH highlighted several key points:

  1. State-of-the-Art Facilities: The hospital underlined its commitment to providing top-notch medical care, equipped with state-of-the-art facilities to ensure the best possible outcomes for patients.

  2. Experienced Medical Consultants: LASUTH stated that their medical consultants are highly knowledgeable, skilled, and professional, implying that such a grave error would not be made intentionally.

  3. Intraoperative Findings: During the corrective surgery, the medical team discovered certain unusual findings. They assured that video clips of the procedure were available for transparency and clarification.

  4. Investigation: LASUTH mentioned that they had initiated a comprehensive investigation into the case through a high-powered panel. This reflects their commitment to addressing any potential lapses and ensuring accountability.

  5. Patient Empathy: While defending their position, LASUTH expressed empathy towards the patient’s family and suggested that financial assistance might be appropriate. They discouraged the use of social media as a platform for blackmail against the state government.

  6. Cooperation with Authorities: LASUTH reaffirmed its commitment to cooperating with state agencies that were already investigating the matter, demonstrating their dedication to transparency and accountability.

From a hospital management safety standpoint, LASUTH has asserted its commitment to providing high-quality medical care, transparency in addressing medical complications, and cooperation with investigations. They maintain that the alleged loss of the patient’s intestines was not a willful act, and they empathize with the family while seeking a constructive resolution to the situation.
