Scorpion stings are common in many parts of Nigeria, especially in warm and dry environments. While most stings are not fatal, the way you respond in the first few minutes can prevent serious complications.
Step 1: Stay Calm and Move to Safety
Panic can increase heart rate and spread venom faster through the body. Move away from the area to avoid another sting.
Step 2: Clean the Sting Site
Wash the affected area gently with clean water and mild soap. This helps reduce the risk of infection.
Step 3: Apply a Cool Compress
Place a clean, cool cloth or ice wrapped in fabric on the sting site for about 10 to 15 minutes. This can reduce pain and swelling. Do not apply ice directly to the skin.
Step 4: Keep the Affected Area Still
Limit movement of the affected limb. Keeping it still slows the spread of venom in the body.
Step 5: Manage Pain Safely
Pain is often immediate and intense. If available, a mild pain reliever such as Paracetamol can be used. Avoid taking strong medications without medical advice.
Step 6: Watch for Warning Signs
Monitor for symptoms such as difficulty breathing, excessive sweating, muscle twitching, vomiting, or unusual restlessness. These may indicate a severe reaction.
Step 7: Seek Medical Help Immediately If Symptoms Worsen
Go to the nearest hospital or clinic if symptoms become severe, especially for children or elderly individuals. Anti venom treatment may be required in serious cases.

Always shake out shoes, clothes, and bedding before use. Keep living spaces clean and free of debris. Use insect control measures where necessary, and avoid placing hands in dark or hidden areas without checking.
Scorpion stings can be painful, but with the right steps taken quickly, most cases can be managed safely without long term effects.
