The Director General, Lagos State Safety Commission, (LSSC) Mr Lanre Mojola, on Monday commended the partnership of the Occupational Safety and Health.) OSH, Germany with the Lagos State Safety Commission to train not less than 50 people on Occupational health and safety.
Lanre Mojola said the training would increase awareness, knowledge and advocacy of participants who would domesticate it to reduce the risk and accidents in our workplace all over the country.
HSENations reports that Mojola made this known in his welcome address at the opening ceremony of the train the trainer programme facilitated by the Lagos Safety Commission (LSSC) in conjunction with Safety Advocates and Empowerment Foundation, (SAEF) and sponsored by European Commission at the Lagos Chamber of Commerce and Industries, LCCI, Alausa, Ikeja, Lagos,
Lanre Mojola maintained that the training is believed to strengthen the trainee and build capacity of significant number of practitioners, managers, graduates and more from any discipline in HSE, adding that it would at the long run make Lagos State and indeed the entire country secure, safe and more worth living.
He further commended the Safety Advocates and Empowerment Foundation, SAEF, for their efforts in facilitating such a laudable programme that could attract foreign involvement for the well-being and safety of millions of Nigerians, just as he requested that the beneficiaries of the training ensure the aim of the train the trainers is achieved so that it can be beneficial to all and sundry.
“Let me commend the partnership of the IOSH, Germany with the Lagos Safety Commission in kick-starting the training of 500, 000 people across the nation with the set of 50 people in this training tagged, “Train the Trainers“. I must not also forget to appreciate the Safety Advocates & Empowerment Foundation, SAEF as well as the facilitator and sponsor of this laudable initiative, the European Commission. I would also implore the benefactors of this programme to strengthen the train so that it can achieve its aim of transferring the knowledge of safety and health advocacy to every nook and crannies of this country“, Mojola said.
In his remark, Commissioner for Special Duties and Intergovernmental Relations, Dr Wale Ahmed, said the issue of safety is very paramount and germaine and reiterated that we should all emphasize on basic safety rules at all times, irrespective of where we find ourselves. be it at home, workplace or social gatherings. .
Ahmed expressed appreciation to all the foreign partners, especially from the Institute of Occupational safety and Health, IOSH UK and Germany for their collaboration with the state government on transfer of knowledge but appealed that they should begin their teaching by telling us to always adhere and take to simple basic safety rules before any other things.
He also decried not having enough exit doors at our malls or social places, a feat that doesn’t augur well as far as our safety is concerned.
“Your visit and collaboration is most welcome. But I would suggest you don’t limit the collaboration with the training on the occupational and health alone but always emphasize on the need to let all and sundry employ simple basic safety rules at all times“, Ahmed said.
In his remark, the National Coordinator of SAEF, Mr Dapo Omolade, said the programme was designed to develop Occupational Safety and Health profession in the country, adding that the more Nigerians are trained, the less the risk of accidents is reduced and also additionally, it makes the nation safe and secure.
