The Africa Safety Awards for Excellence (AfriSAFE) is proud to introduce its esteemed panel of judges for the 2024 edition. These distinguished professionals will meticulously evaluate shortlisted entries from five African regions, seeking nominees who have made significant contributions to workplace safety while profoundly impacting society.
The judges’ primary focus will be on the following criteria:

- Innovation and best practices
- Leadership and commitment to health, safety, and sustainability
With 11,426 nominations from 32 countries, narrowed down to 110 finalists, AfriSAFE 2024 promises to be a remarkable celebration of excellence.
Under the careful guidance of our expert judges, the winners will be selected based on rigorous evaluation standards, ensuring fairness and a deserving recognition of outstanding achievements.
We are honored to present the distinguished panel of judges for AfriSAFE 2024:
Prof. Gloria J. Browne-Marshall – Chief Observer
Prof. Gloria J. Browne-Marshall, an acclaimed author, professor, civil rights attorney, and playwright, serves as the Chief Observer for AfriSAFE 2024. Her expertise in constitutional law, Africa studies, and social justice, coupled with her experience speaking at global institutions such as the United Nations and universities across Africa and Europe, ensures a rigorous and transparent judging process. Browne-Marshall is a tenured professor at John Jay College (CUNY) and a frequent commentator for major news outlets like CNN, BBC, and MSNBC.
Mrs. Nofisat Arogundade, BSc, MBA, FISPN, FOSHA, MNIM
Distinguished Safety Professional & Visionary Leader in Occupational Safety and Health
Mrs. Nofisat Arogundade is a trailblazer in the field of occupational safety and health, with nearly four decades of service. Retired as Director of Occupational Safety and Health at Nigeria’s Federal Ministry of Labour and Employment, she played a pivotal role in shaping national safety policy. Mrs. Arogundade has been a Fellow of the Institute of Safety Professionals of Nigeria (FISPN) and the Occupational Safety and Health Association (FOSHA) and has been a consistent AfriSAFE judge since 2020.
David Foy – Joint Interim Head of Health and Safety, University of Central Lancashire (UCLan)
David Foy is a seasoned health and safety expert, currently serving as Joint Interim Head of Health and Safety at UCLan. With fellowships in IOSH and IIRSM and a long-standing reputation in QHSE practices, Foy has been a judge for AfriSAFE since 2020. His expertise in risk management and safety innovation, combined with his work on award selection panels in the UK, brings exceptional value to the judging process.
Mary J. Stine, MS OSH, ASP – Occupational Health, Safety, and Environmental Expert
With over 25 years of experience in occupational health, safety, and environmental management, Mary Stine is a highly regarded safety professional. Certified by the Board of Certified Safety Professionals (USA), she holds leadership roles in safety societies and has developed groundbreaking safety systems across multiple industries. Passionate about mentoring the next generation, Mary brings both depth and diversity to the AfriSAFE judging panel.
Nthabiseng Mmusi – Founder & Consulting Partner, S.H.E On Standby
Nthabiseng Mmusi is a highly respected practitioner in safety, health, environmental, and risk management, particularly in the mining sector. With a strong academic background and certification in international safety standards, she has made significant contributions to the industry and is committed to mentorship and philanthropy. As the current AfriSAFE Global President, she continues to influence the safety landscape across Africa.
Wale Bakare – Multiple-Award-Winning HSE Expert & Management Systems Specialist
Wale Bakare is an internationally respected HSE expert, auditor, and consultant with over two decades of experience. A Fellow of the Emergency, Crisis, and Risk Management Institute of Nigeria, he has worked on high-impact safety projects globally and has supported major organizations in achieving ISO certification. His expertise in integrated management systems and his role as a thought leader in health and safety make him a valuable addition to the AfriSAFE judging panel.
