At the International Conference & Awards on Health, Safety, Security, and Emergency Response Ready (SafERR) Global Institute in Lagos, Hon. Sulaiman Abubakar Gumi, Chairman of the House of Representatives’ Committee on Safety Standards and Regulations, emphasized the urgent need for integrating advanced technologies and frameworks into public safety and environmental management.
Delivering a keynote address, Hon. Gumi highlighted the importance of e-governance, e-health, smart healthcare, and the use of Artificial Intelligence in all sectors. He stated, “Public Safety is the cornerstone of a functioning society, protecting our communities from crime, disasters, and accidents. However, it extends beyond mere response; it involves proactive measures, community engagement, and creating environments where people feel secure.”
Hon. Gumi, who was honored as a Fellow of the Institute, stressed the role of technology and data analytics in predicting and preventing threats. “We must leverage these tools to foster trust and cooperation between law enforcement and the communities they serve,” he said.
He also addressed the significance of emergency management, describing it as a structured approach involving preparation, response, recovery, and mitigation. Effective management, he noted, requires robust planning and coordination among government and community organizations.
“Lessons from past events highlight the need for resilient infrastructure, clear communication channels, and adaptability,” he added. “By integrating technological innovations and strengthening public-private partnerships, we can enhance our preparedness and response capabilities.”
Hon. Gumi further underscored the vital connection between environmental sustainability and public safety. “Sustainable practices such as reducing carbon emissions and protecting ecosystems are essential. Climate change intensifies extreme weather events, making it crucial to adopt strategies that mitigate environmental impacts and build resilience.”
He advocated for a holistic approach that combines sustainable practices with urban planning and public safety considerations. “Integrating these fields will help us build resilient communities and protect both people and ecosystems,” he said.
The Chairman also called for increased citizen engagement, IT governance, and innovation to support national infrastructure and the digital economy. “Advancing e-governance, e-health, and AI applications across sectors will create smart, secure, and sustainable environments for all,” Hon. Gumi concluded.
“To achieve these goals,” he emphasized, “we need collaboration, innovation, and a commitment to long-term thinking. By leveraging our collective expertise, we can build resilient communities, protect our environment, and ensure a safer future for generations to come.”
