The House of Representatives Committee on Safety Standards and Regulations has announced that, effective October 19, 2024, all health and environmental safety practitioners in Nigeria must obtain the new certification from the Institute of Safety Professionals of Nigeria (ISPON), in accordance with the Institute’s Act of 2014.
The committee’s chairman, Hon. Sulaiman Gumi, disclosed this during a press briefing in Abuja on Friday, ahead of the ISPON Unification Conference and Annual General Meeting (AGM), scheduled to take place from October 17 to 19 in the nation’s capital.
Gumi emphasized that, from October 19, a new executive body will be elected to lead ISPON, and only certifications issued by the incoming leadership will be recognized by the National Assembly. A revalidation process will also be conducted, and new certificates will be issued.
Urging stakeholders to support the unification efforts, Gumi said, “Since 2016, leadership disputes and election-related issues divided ISPON into three factions, significantly hampering its operations.”
