Safe Migration Policy: IOM Set To Support African Countries

The International Organisation for Migration (IOM) has set its sights on assisting African countries in developing policies that would promote safe migration.

The Regional Policy Liaison Officer, IOM, Alice Kimani, disclosed this at a regional migration forum held in Nairobi, Kenya on Monday.

She listed Kenya, South Sudan, Ethiopia and Uganda, as countries who have already indicated an interest in IOM’s aid.

“We will provide technical expertise to ensure African countries develop comprehensive policies that ensure migrants travel in a safe and regular manner so that are able to contribute to socio-economic development of the continent,” Kimani said.

She noted that African countries have witnessed an exodus of migrants looking for better opportunities abroad.

“People have a right to look for better opportunities and seek asylum but if they don’t have regular path ways they could fall into hands of smugglers.” she said.

Kimani also stated that in order to safeguard the rights of migrants, the UN agency is also assisting African countries to sign bilateral labour agreements between the source and destination countries for labour
