Traders are panicking and counting their losses after a popular food market in Calabar City was gutted by fire.
According to eyewitnesses, the fire started at about 8:45 pm on Friday, July 3rd, 2020, and may have been caused by a generating set kept in one of the shops where foodstuffs are sold.
They claimed that at least one trader may have left his generating set or keg of fuel inside the shop and unfortunately as other traders come with naked fire to transact at night,it must have let to the explosion and caused the fire.
As of press time, no life was lost but goods worth millions of Naira have been destroyed. Men of the Cross River State Fire Service are yet to respond to the distress call.
Marian market which is located just opposite the Calabar municipality Secretariat is hugely patronized by food vendors and hoteliers, as other people sell foodstuffs also in wholesale and retail.
