FAAN Boosts Airport Safety with Advanced Training of 3000 Personnel, Upgrades

The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) has reinforced its commitment to safety at the nation’s airports, implementing comprehensive measures that include personnel training, infrastructure upgrades, and modern safety systems to ensure secure flight operations.

Under the leadership of Managing Director Olubunmi Kuku, FAAN has trained 3,219 personnel, including staff from related aviation agencies, dedicating over 1,765 hours to courses such as airside operations, crisis management, and ICAO safety protocols. These initiatives aim to enhance operational safety and ensure compliance with international standards.

FAAN’s Safety Services Training Unit has emphasized programs like emergency response drills, crisis simulations, and training on modern safety protocols to prepare staff for scenarios including natural disasters, structural fires, and aircraft incidents. This proactive approach aligns with FAAN’s adoption of the Safety Management System (SMS), which fosters open communication, collaboration among stakeholders, and continuous safety monitoring and improvement.

The authority has also modernized critical airport infrastructure. Recent upgrades include the reopening of Runway 18R and 36L at Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMIA), which minimizes collision risks and resolves delays caused by the shared use of domestic and international runways. Additionally, FAAN has introduced advanced security technologies, such as upgraded screening equipment and surveillance systems, to bolster airport safety and efficiency.

Mrs. Kuku emphasized that safety is the backbone of airport operations, noting, “Our investment in infrastructure, training, and advanced safety management reflects our commitment to protecting lives and fostering trust among travelers, staff, and stakeholders.”

FAAN’s strategic efforts signify a long-term vision to create safer airports through stringent safety protocols, advanced technologies, and a robust safety culture that prioritizes the well-being of passengers and employees alike.
