Safety Expert Calls For Sustainable Fire Safety Plan

The Chief Executive Officer of Safety Experts Limited, Mrs. Debbie Windele has called on Nigerian safety stakeholders in different government sectors to drive a sustainable fire safety plan for Lagos state.

Mrs. Debbie Windele stated this at the 2nd Lagos Fire Safety Conference held in Lagos.

“There has been a lot of high incidents in Nigeria lately both the ones I have read about and the addressed myself. We need to start doing more of the preventive parts,” she said.

HSENations reports that Mrs. Debbie Windele who is also the convener of the 2nd Lagos Fire Safety Conference lauded the Lagos state government for moving in the right direction in the area of safety but however called for more sensitization.

Windele admonished organization and individuals to put in place necessary assessments, policies and equipment s that will prevent fire disasters.

“Organization should carryout business assessment of their policies all the time. They should reduce the amount of diesel they bring in; and have the right fire extinguishers. They should put a lot of safety measures in the organization. I’m not saying fire can be stopped but we can reduce it.

“Individuals should have something we call smoke detector; and a gas detector as well. If you have gas, it would detect the smell and then a little fire starting as well would be detected. So we have a combination of both. If you live in a house, have one on each floor. It would protect you. So you can leave the building quickly before the fire becomes big,” she said.

She further implored Nigerians and Lagosians to take fire safety seriously and respect emergency sirens and vehicles and give them  way to do their jobs as someone’s life could be depending on it.

The conference had in attendance representatives from the Red Cross Society (RCS), Lagos Chamber of Commerce and Industry (LCCI), Institute of Safety Professionals of Nigeria (ISPON), Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA), Department of Petroleum Resources (DPR), among others.
